Random Thoughts from a Confessed Film Snob

FWWF - Gedo Senki

If you are familiar at all with Studio Ghibli, then you know that thier name is synonymous with quality.

Their star player is Hayao Miyazaki, who has produced the greatest ink-and-paint animation of the last twenty years. All of his films deserve to be seen but if you have not seen any of the following you need to do so:

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
My Neighbor Totoro
Princess Mononoke
Sprited Away

Studio Ghibli produces films by other directors as well, and they are all very good, but never as great as Miyazaki's. I am willing to go out on a limb, though, and predict that Studio Ghibli's newest film, "Gedo Senki", is going to be a Film Worth Waiting For.

"Gedo Senki" is not being directed by Hayao Miyazaki, but rather by his son, Goro Miyazaki. Goro has never directed a feature before, but if he only has half of his father's talent, this will be a great film.

"Gedo Senki" is an adaptation of the Earthsea books by Ursula K. LeGuin (which were butched by the SciFi Channel in a 2004 miniseries).

There is some sneak-peak footage up in the web right now which looks absolutely beautiful. It definitely has the look and feel I would expect from a Miyazaki. You can see the footage and still images here (but you'll need to have Real Player).

Great source material + top-notch studio + director with impressive pedigree +
breathtaking first look = Film Worth Waiting For.
